The History of Llywelyn's Pub
Llywelyn’s Pub was opened in St. Louis at 4747 McPherson by Jack Brangle. Along with Cafe Balaban and Duff’s Restaurant, it marked the beginning of the present day Central West End business district. Llywelyn's Pub served primarily Welsh fare and was a small intimate pub with the cooks line located beside the bar.
In the late eighties, the adjacent property was acquired. A new kitchen was installed and a dining room was added; the menu was expanded and Llywelyn’s Pub could now offer a true restaurant setting along with the bar.
In 1997, the present ownership acquired the Pub. The theme was expanded to include both Irish and Scottish selections and Llywelyn’s became a “Celtic” Pub. The menus were expanded, the décor and seating arrangements were changed and the Pub re-opened in the Fall of 1997.
After three very successful years, the demand for more seating drove the ownership to expand into the second floor. A new full-service bar was opened along with seating for restaurant overflow and private parties. Llywelyn’s Loft was an instant hit. Soon after, the parking lot located in the rear of the Pub was converted into one of St. Louis’s most hidden and charming beer gardens with a full-service bar and a beautiful mural based on the work of Thomas Guilroy, the famous Guinness beer artist.
In 2003, Llywelyn’s launched its most ambitious project to date. An old machine shop in historic Webster Groves was converted into the next Llywelyn’s Pub. An old Gaslight Square bar along with a giant vaulted ceiling are the main features of the pub. The menu was then expanded to offer a greater selection of Celtic fare. A few years later, the restaurant added a banquet room with its own full-service bar; it is used for both parties and additional restaurant seating.
The Soulard area was the next target for expansion with the opening of a Llywelyn’s Pub at the corner of Soulard Avenue and Ninth Street. Opened in the Winter of 2006, the Pub features two full-service bars and is a great place to pre-party before any downtown events or home games.
In 2010, Llywelyn's Pub opened it's doors on Main Street in the beautiful Historic St. Charles. Placed in the old National Bank building, the pub features seating in the old vault and an expansive patio overlooking the Missouri River. The location has much to offer, from the beautiful patio to the private space downstairs.
Another pub was opened in the village of WingHaven in O'Fallon, Missouri in the spring of 2011. Instantly becoming a great neighbor, Llywelyn's Pub is happy to bring a true pub experience to the area.
In December 2016, Llywelyn's Pub brought St. Peters something they had not yet seen - a true Celtic pub in a convenient and developing area. The new space is equipped with two full-service indoor bars, plus a fantastic outdoor bar that connects to the patio. This location offers something truly unique to the community, and we look forward to building a relationship with guests in the area.
